With the exception of backstroke all swimming races start on the block, out of the water.
The key to a great start requires a swimmer to do three things.
Listen. Anticipate. React.
Listen to the start commands. Anticipate the start. React with speed into a streamline.

Feet shoulder width apart
Bend Your Knees
Dive out not down
Remember a start is a jump! Putting your focus on leg force,
acceleration, speed, and propulsion will help you jump farther out- into the water
